Daniel Fast Day 1 (Part 2)…Produce is Expensive

21 May

I promise that for the next 20 days, I will try not to bore you with exactly how many heads of lettuce I have consumed and different kinds of fruit you have never heard of. After all, this fast is about God first and food second.  However, just for today I will tell you about how I am planning and preparing for the Daniel Fast, and what that looks like in a Grocery Store.

To get started, I purchased the book  The Ultimate Daniel Fast by Kristen Feola. There is another book, simply called The Daniel Fast by Susan Gregory. They are both great resources, but I chose the version by Kristen Feola because it has pictures of the food and recipes and I am a visual person. Both authors have amazing websites, and you can even sign up for free downloads and a newsletter on the Susan Gregory website, www.daniel-fast.com.

The first thing I did in preparation was review the meal plans and make a shopping list. I diligently typed all of the items from the week 1 meal plan into a spreadsheet by category, printed it out and put it into my purse. Somehow between the time I printed thee  list (Sunday night) and made it to the grocery store (Monday morning), the list magically disappeared. But, how hard could it be to buy a lot of fruits and vegetables? Right?

9 am. Enter local H-E-B. The first thing I see is a 100% dried fruit snack. Great, right? Wrong. Look at the price of that little teeny bag! Yes, folks. That is 7 dollars for “Just” strawberries and bananas.

Lesson 3: When buying produce, choose the most raw variety. Any additional packaging, etc. is going to cost more money.

I did however make some fantastic discoveries. The first of which is called “Naked Juice.” This bad boy was awesome. I was a little leery at first (who wants to drink something green?), but it was actually really good.  The rules of the Daniel Fast say that the  only beverage is water, however you are allowed to replace meals with smoothies and such so this became my breakfast.

Another awesome discovery: Ezekial 4:9 cereal. I mean, a box of cereal with an actual Bible Verse on it?! Wow. I’ll take 2. Well, at $6 each…maybe I’ll take one.

So the refrigerator and pantry are stocked, and $210 and 2 hours later I am ready to truly begin my fast.

So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God. 1 Corinthians 10:31
